Vinicius Alex do Espirito Santo - Founder and Head Coach

Welcome to BJJ Freo, your premier destination for inclusive and accessible Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training in Fremantle and the wider Perth region.

I am Vinicius Alex do Espirito Santo, a dedicated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach with a passion for fostering growth and community through the art of BJJ. Born in Brazil in 1987, I bring a deep-rooted heritage and extensive technical expertise to our local community. My journey in BJJ has been one of transformation, resilience, and a commitment to inclusivity.

My BJJ Journey:

My Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey began at the age of 13. However, life’s demands led me to pause my training intermittently. I resumed my practice more consistently at 22, but my job, which required frequent travel across Brazil, led to sporadic training sessions. Despite these challenges, I seized every opportunity to train at various gyms in different cities, continuously honing my skills and deepening my love for BJJ.

I earned my blue belt under Master Ivan Maia at Checkmat CarapicuΓba. Before moving to Australia, I worked in Santos City, which allowed me to train under Mestre Marinho and achieve my purple belt just before relocating.

In Australia, I found my BJJ home at GFTEAM Joondalup under Master Marcelo Guimaraes. It was here that I discovered the transformative power of BJJ, realizing it could be a viable and healthy way of living. I began teaching adults, kids, teens, and private classes at the gym, earning both my brown and black belts during this time.

Due to a move to Fremantle and a knee surgery, I had to reduce my teaching and training time at GFTEAM Joondalup. However, after my recovery, I am now ready to start a new chapter with BJJ Freo. My goal is to create a unique training environment that emphasizes understanding, enjoyment, and the true spirit of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

A Source of Empowerment:

Throughout my journey, BJJ has been a source of connection and empowerment. When I practice BJJ, I no longer feel clumsy; instead, I can move in ways that allow me to play and adapt to the present moment. This newfound confidence enables me to face whatever challenges arise, and my mind finds safety and connection. I am deeply grateful for all my training partners, students, and especially my masters who have guided me along the way: Master Ivan Maia, Mestre Marinho, and Master Marcelo Guimaraes. Their trust and support have been invaluable in my journey.
